Ribbon Cutting Held for New Shenandoah University Athletic Center

12 February 2018 Community News

The James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center Ribbon Cutting was held at 12:30 p.m. in the lobby of the brand new Wilkins Athletics & Events Center. Participants celebrated the opening of the 77,000-square-foot indoor athletic facility, which serves the university’s 21 athletics teams, the entire university community and the local and regional communities.

This ribbon cutting event honored one of the university’s most ardent supporters as well, James R. “Jimmy” Wilkins, Jr., who is a member of the university’s board of trustees and co-chair of the Athletics & Events Center Steering Committee.

James Wilkins spoke at the event, and took the opportunity to introduce his family to the crowd, whom he described as “three generations working together.”

“I walked the Shenandoah campus back in the fifties when there wasn’t a single building here,” said Wilkins. “I walked it with my father. We had no money. No place to get money from, except to beg, borrow, and steal. The city council had to get it assessed, and the assessment came in at 2,387 dollars. Believe it or not, that was a big deal back then. [So] this is a great day; there have been a lot of transformations on campus.”
