Volunteer in Your Park for Public Lands Day
14 September 2017 News
Public Lands Day is a time for us to come together to enjoy the great outdoors and celebrate the lands that give us so much. Shenandoah National Park is looking for volunteers to help your park on Saturday, September 30th from 10am – 1pm by gathering seeds of native plants for restoration projects in the Park. Seeds of native plants are needed to re-vegetate areas cleared of invasive weeds or disturbed by facility maintenance. Many of the species appropriate for use in the Park aren’t currently available from seed dealers. It’s also the National Park Service’s policy to use seed collected from as close to the restoration site as possible.
Where: Meet in front of Skyland Resort (the upper portion of the parking lot near the Dining Hall) to carpool to a few close locations.
How to prepare: Dress appropriately for the weather–and remember that it’s often 10 degrees cooler in the Park. Layers are advised, as are a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and drinking water. Please bring a packed lunch. In honor of National Public Lands Day admission to Shenandoah National Park is free on September 30.
