2018 Crime Statistics for Valley and State Released
Virginia State Police released crime statistics for last year from police departments and sheriff’s offices across the state.
Over 362,000 incidents of crime were reported in the Commonwealth in 2018, with the greatest number of offenses reported in July. Over $209 million worth of financial property was lost to theft in Virginia. In general for the state, murder and manslaughter rates, simple assault, robbery, arson, and destruction of property went down, while the year saw an uptick in drug offenses, extortion, and abductions.
Of the counties in the Northern Shenandoah Valley, Frederick showed the greatest amount of crime, with its Sheriff’s Office reporting more than 3,400 total offenses and over 2,600 arrests. The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office reported the least crime, with 196 total offenses. Winchester’s Police Department alone reported 2,432 total offenses and 2,153 arrests.
