News Maker Joey Waters on Dare to Dream Grant Deadline

The Front Royal Warren County Women’s Resource Center deadline to apply for Dare to Dream grants is fast approaching.

We spoke with a Chairperson for the Dare to Dream Program Joey Waters in our latest news maker.

Joey tells us who is eligible for the grants.

She also explains how much and what the grants can be used for.

Joey also explains the process for applying which has to be done by Jan. 14 but she explains that there could be a little extra time.

VA. Legislature opens session with Woodstock’s Todd Gilbert as speaker

The Virginia Political news letter reports that Woodstock Republican Todd Gilbert was elected in a unanimous vote as speaker of the house.

Gilbert is only the second speaker of the house from Shenandoah County in history.

The other being Democrat Henry Clay Allen from 1877 to 79.

According to the Montana Standard the Virginia General Assembly opened their 60 day session with Todd Gilbert as speaker yesterday.

Over those 60 days members of the house will craft a two year budget and discuss bills covering a range of issues including education, marijuana policies, voting rights and public safety.

The chamber will soon be presided over by Winchester Republican  Lt. Gov. Elect Winsome Earle Sears who will be sworn in on Saturday.

Agencies across Virginia prepare for possible snow

An email from Shenandoah Valley Electric Cooperative (SVEC) reminds member owners to prepare now ahead of the projected snow this weekend which looks to impact Jan.16 and 17.

SVEC suggest fully charging devices, prepare a home outage kit with flashlights, blankets, canned and packaged food and batteries.

The City of Winchester offered this page to prepare you for the possible Sun. storm in an email.

LFCC receives a grant for food security for students

An email from Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) announced that the school received a $5,000 grant.

The funds will be used to bolster the food pantries at the Middletown and Fauquier Campuses.

According to the email a recent survey shows that one third of community college students suffer from food insecurity.

Over 63 percent those students don’t apply for benefits because they don’t know they are eligible.

The food pantries at any of the LFCC campuses are available to any student regardless of their financial status.

The $5,000 grant will stock the pantries with food and hygiene products for students as well.

The funds were awarded to LFCC through a grant from the chain of checks campaign the Community Foundation of the Shenandoah Valley serves as fiscal agents for chain of checks.

Inaugural ceremony for Governor Elect Youngkin will be live streamed

In a social post from Governor Elect Glenn Youngkin he invites us to watch his swearing in ceremony and parade on a live stream.

Winchester resident Republican Lieutenant Governor Elect Winsome Earle Sears will also be sworn into office on Sat. Jan. 15 along side the governor elect.

The Governor Elect oath of office will take place starting at noon on Sat. Jan. 15 for the 74 governor of Virginia at this link.

The swearing in will be followed by a spirit of community parade which will also be streamed.

Youngkin states that the parade will showcase groups from all corners of the Commonwealth.
