CCSO arrest a suspect who threatened law enforcement and accosted his girlfriend

Used with permission of Clarke County Sheriff Travis Sumption

The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) reports the arrest of a suspect who assaulted a female and threatened law enforcement.

Deputies responded to the report of a domestic disturbance in the 500 block of Russell Road involving an armed individual October 13.

The caller reported that a female was being held against her will and physically assaulted by her boyfriend who was armed and threatened to shoot law enforcement.

On arrival deputies immediately established a perimeter around the residence to protect the neighborhood.

Authorities were able to contact Laban Scott Hudson whose girlfriend informed law enforcement that he was intoxicated and possibly influenced by illegal substances.

Further investigation found that the 47-year-old Hudson had multiple outstanding probation violation charges from Clarke County as well as the City of Winchester.

Due to Hudson’s previous negative encounters with law enforcement, additional support was called in from Virginia State Police.

Before the arrival of State Police, the female victim was safely extracted from the home and evaluated by medical personnel at the scene.

Following repeated attempts to get Hudson to leave the residence peacefully the tactical team made entry into the home.

Hudson was found in the attic with what appeared to be a firearm.

Continued communications ultimately successfully convinced Hudson to surrender and be taken into custody.

Hudson is in custody and faces 8 probation violations including 4 felony charges and 3 misdemeanor charges and a charge of receiving stolen goods.

Charges from the October 13 incident include use of a firearm in commission of a felony, a felon in possession of a firearm, abduction, assault and battery and preventing a victim from calling 911.

SNP confirms the recovery of human remains in the Naked Creek area of the park

photo credit Scott Bradley Hesson with permission

The Shenandoah National Park (SNP) confirmed by email that human remains have been recovered from the park.

The remains were recovered by search and rescue personnel near a tent in the Naked Creek Backcountry on September 22.

The park received notification of a missing hiker on September 22 prompting the search and rescue operation with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management.

The search centered around the Naked Creek backcountry zone which remains closed until further notice.

According to an online report from Hoodline the closure of backcountry camping had been prohibited along the Appalachian Trail between Lewis Mountain and Big Meadows due to wildlife interactions.

Investigators did confirm evidence of wildlife in the discovery area but could not confirm a connection to the death.

At this point in the investigation the cause of death has not been determined.

According to Outside Magazine part of the reason for the lack of public information is due to a late 2025 internal Department of the Interior policy memo.

That memo instructs National Park Service personnel nationwide to not confirm visitor deaths or disclose injury severity directly to the public.
