A community icon honored

The title of 2025 Berryville-Clarke County Veteran of the Year was presented to a well-known local figure: Allen “Bugs” McWilliams.

The award, which is always a surprise to the recipient, was presented by Board of Supervisors Chair David Weiss.

He moved to Berryville at the age of eight, Mr. McWilliams has a deep history of service.

  • He joined the John H. Enders Fire Company back in 1958.
  • In 1963, he answered the call of duty, serving our nation in the U.S. Air Force before being honorably discharged in 1967.
  • Upon returning home, he became a lifetime member of the Lloyd Williams Post 41 American Legion, serving as Commander from 1970 to 1971. He remains a life member after 58 years.

Many in Berryville will remember Allen McWilliams as the owner and operator of McWilliams Exxon at the corner of Main and Buckmarsh Streets, a community hub where neighbors gathered to talk and build friendships.

Beyond his business, he dedicated himself to local government, serving Berryville in key roles for nearly 25 years.

He served on the Town Council, then became Town Recorder and Vice Mayor, successfully championing fiscal responsibility, low taxes, and a professional community police force.

Mr. McWilliams is remembered for governing with common sense and deep respect for individual rights.

Allen McWilliams also served as a Little League coach and is a faithful member of Berryville Baptist Church.
