Winchester Public Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Nikea Hurt as Principal of Virginia Avenue Charlotte DeHart Elementary School effective July 1, 2017.
Nikea Hurt is a native of Atlanta, Georgia and has lived there all her life. Hurt is the oldest of three daughters with the youngest currently in college. Hurt brings 14 years of experience to the table; nine years as a teacher, two years as an elementary assistant principal and three years as an elementary principal. A graduate of Argosy University in Tampa, Florida, Hurt earned both her Doctorate and Education Specialist degrees in Educational Leadership. She also earned an additional Performance-Based Educational Specialist in Building Level Educational Leadership from Mercer University, a Masters in Adult Instruction from Central Michigan, and a Bachelor of Science degree from Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia.
Hurt shared that it has been her experiences throughout education that have helped to shape her view of what it truly means to be an instructional leader. “Education is a profession of service, and leadership is a position that affords me the opportunity to serve on a wider platform.” Hurt believes it is through servant leadership; the showing of others, the dedication to students, staff, and the community the trust that is developed, and the doorway to honest conversations that teaching and learning take place.
Hurt’s personal goal is to provide an environment that fosters students’ interest and inspires them beyond any self-imposed limitations. Hurt said “I am honestly just excited to be here. The feeling of warmth and welcome, combined with the spirit of continued success has made this transition already start to feel like home. I can’t wait to meet the outstanding staff, parents, and most importantly the ‘Little Judges’ at Virginia Avenue Charlotte DeHart Elementary School. I am honored and excited to join this magnificent family.”
Dr. Nan Bryant, Director of Elementary Instruction, stated, “I am very excited to welcome Dr. Hurt to Winchester Public Schools. She brings successful principal experience, including leading her current school in earning recognition as a Title I Reward School: Highest Progress for distinction in improvement in student achievement. She brings depth of knowledge, an impressive educational background, and great commitment to her students, families, and community. I look forward to Dr. Hurt joining the elementary schools leadership team.”
Dr. Hurt comes to Winchester from Marietta, Georgia, where she is currently Principal of Dunleith Elementary School.
The principal position at Virginia Avenue Charlotte DeHart Elementary School became available as a result of Dr. Matthew Wygal’s appointment as principal of Daniel Morgan Intermediate School.
