ROANOKE, Va. – The Shenandoah University women’s basketball team clinched the No. 11 seed at the upcoming ODAC Tournament with a 54-52 victory at Hollins Wednesday evening.

Junior Kirstyn Arcata, who had a game-high 22 points, gave her team the victory by canning a 3-pointer with two seconds remaining to push Shenandoah (5-19, 2-13 ODAC) past Hollins (5-19, 0-15) for the second time this season.

The victory also snapped a 10-game losing streak for the Hornets.

Arcata’s bucket, one of eight she had on the night, capped a contest in which the two teams traded the lead six times and were tied on one additional occasion.

SU led by nine, 15-6, after one, 28-24 at the half and 43-41 after three only to see Hollins take a 49-48 lead with 3:10 to play on an Emily Jo Huffard jumper.

Arcata answered with a ‘3’ just 27 seconds to put Shenandoah on top but again HU had an answer.

The hosts took their final lead with 1:21 left on a Porsha Waddey ‘3’, and Shenandoah missed two attempts in the waning moments before being forced to foul and putting Hollins on the line with five seconds left.

HU missed both of those free throws and senior Olivia Callan found Arcata for the game-winning ‘3’.

“Kirstyn not only stepped up and hit big shot after big shot, she also defended their leading scorer for 39 minutes and held her to just one field goal,” head coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft said.

“Tonight was a great team win. We believed in each other right through to the final horn.”

Shenandoah completes its regular season on Saturday with a 2 p.m. ODAC contest versus Randolph College. The Hornets will open ODAC Tournament play on Tuesday on the road at the No. 6 seed (mostly likely Randolph-Macon or Washington and Lee) in a 7 p.m. contest.
