Ashby Lee Elementary Principal Appears in Court

9 November 2018 Shenandoah County News

The first court appearance in the case of a principal and Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office deputy accused of hitting a child took place yesterday.

Stephen Povlish, who has now been placed on leave as principal of Ashby Lee Elementary School, appeared in Shenandoah County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court alongside an attorney for Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office deputy and school resource officer Tabatha Baker-Whitacre. Both are accused of hitting a five year-old in August; a Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office investigation determined that Baker-Whitacre hit the child in the face three times between August 16th and 17th, and there is an accusation that Povlish struck the same child in another incident. During yesterday’s appearance, the next court appearance for both defendants was set for January 31st, 2019 at 9:30 a.m.
