BCSD welfare check serves as an important reminder

Used by permission of Berkeley County Sheriff Department Office Administrator Brandy Sullivan

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department (BCSD) reports that a welfare check led to a important reminder.

On January 26 at approximately 3 p.m. the BCSD received a call from a son who couldn’t reach his elderly mother.

The son told the emergency communication center that he was unable to reach his mom for as many as four days.

When a deputy arrived at the Cracked Walnut Way Martinsburg home, they found the door unsecured.

Venturing inside the deputy attempted verbal contact with the occupants.

An elderly female who appeared to be in distress answered back.

Venturing further in the deputy discovered the elderly mother had fallen and sustained injuries.

The woman had fallen and been on the floor for an undisclosed extended period of time.

The deputy of course rendered aid immediately and called for Emergency Medical Personnel.

Once the medical services arrived the woman was taken to Berkeley Medical Center for further attention and treatment.

The incident serves as reminder to check regularly on our elderly neighbors, friends, and relatives, especially during inclement weather.
