West Virginia state seal. Used by written permission by Chief Deputy and Chief of Staff of West Virginia Chuck Flannery

The Berkeley County Commission has approved by unanimous vote that Chief Deputy Tom Young be appointed interim Sheriff.

According to a West Virginia Press release the appointment follows the resignation of Sheriff Nathan Harmon that went into effect at midnight December 26.

Harmon resigned as part of a plea agreement which involved  his interference with the investigation of his daughter Carrie’s automobile accident earlier this year.

Young will assume all duties of sheriff for a period not exceeding 30 days starting December 27.

The commission reports that they are accepting applications to fill the position of Sheriff Harmon’s unexpired term until January 10.

The term of the former sheriff will end December 31, 2024.
