“Car Hopping” Thefts Alarm Frederick County Sheriff

10 December 2017 News

The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office asked the public for its vigilance on Friday (12/08) in relation to “car hopping,” an activity wherein prospective thieves check for unlocked car doors so that they might enter the vehicle and steal whatever they think they can use, sell, or trade.

The illegal practice has continued to make its way into neighborhoods in the Winchester, Frederick County, and Stephens City area; according to Sheriff Lenny Millholand, “since November 1, 2017 to date there have been 35 reported entries and thefts from people’s cars.” The Sheriff’s Office is asking homeowners and HOAs to spread the word to neighbors and neighborhoods about the importance of locking car doors.
