Clarke County Church Members Targeted in Phone Scam

The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public to a new phone scam that targeted the parishioners of a local church.
The scammer recently contacted members of St. Bridget of Ireland Catholic Church in Berryville; he represented himself as the parish priest before attempting to con them out of money. The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office is advising citizens to be aware anytime they are asked to send money via gift cards. The Federal Trade Commission also suggests that anyone who receives an unexpected call, text, app message or email to type phrases that describe their situation into a search engine, or search the incoming telephone number to check for similar reported scams. You can reports scams to the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov, and to local law enforcement at ic3.gov.
