Clarke County Historic Preservation Commission has selected Richard Grubb and Associates of New Jersey to conduct a comprehensive study of the Battle of Berryville.

The study will be used by the National Register of Historic Places nomination.

The battle took place Sept. 3 and 4, 1864 to a draw just north of VA. Rt. 7.

The location has been labeled by The Federal Advisory Commission of Civil War Sites as one of 384 principal battle sites along with the Battle of Cool Spring sites in Clarke County.

Both sites are on the Virginia and National Registers.

The roughly 7,000 acre battle site study was completely paid for by a federally funded National Park Service grant worth $39,427.
