Clarke County is pushing back against Verizon’s plan to discontinue traditional copper-based landline phone service in the region. Verizon
has notified federal regulators that the service could be discontinued on or after October 23, subject to FCC approval. County officials say some
Clarke residents still rely on landlines because cellular or fiber service is unavailable at their homes. Clarke County says it is asking the FCC to
keep the copper lines operating until a viable alternative is available to every household.
