Demolition of Afton Inn Annex Begins
14 September 2018 News
Demolition of the annex attached to the Afton Inn in Front Royal began this week, as a crew worked Thursday to tear down the structure.
Front Royal’s Board of Architectural Review approved the demolition of the annex and the subsequent renovation of the Afton Inn in July, as well as two additions to the historic building. One addition has been proposed to include four apartments, office and commercial space, and be three stories high. There are also plans to put a cafe inside the inn itself.
Carter + Burton Architecture PLC made precautionary saw cuts on the annex Thursday that will allow them to separate it from the historic main building without causing any damage. They also conducted asbestos removal, and had already removed the annex porch before beginning yesterday’s demolition. This work will carry them into phase 1A of the inn’s renovation, during which repairs will be made to its window headers that have collapsed.
