DGIF Warns of Tough 2020 Turkey Harvest

11 June 2019 Luray/Page County Shenandoah County Front Royal/Warren County Frederick County Clarke County News

On Monday (6/10/2019), the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries announced totals for Virginia’s 2019 turkey harvest.

Overall across the state, 17,929 turkeys were harvested during the spring gobbler season, an increase of 11% from last year. This increase was due entirely to hunting east of the Blue Ridge Mountains; while those figures rose 18% from 2018, turkey hunting west of the Blue Ridge Mountains declined by two percent in 2019, and counties in the Northern Shenandoah Valley saw no more than a 2% change from last year’s numbers. DGIF Turkey Biologist Gary Norman said the generally large harvest was encouraging because reproduction was low in recent years, but that because production in 2018 was particularly low, hunters will be facing a tough year in 2020.
