Elderly Man Found, Rescued on Appalachian Trail
An elderly man was rescued off the Appalachian Trail after being injured to the point that he was unable to walk and suffering from hypothermia.
75-year-old Thomas Sowers was reported missing by family members on Wednesday (2/27/2019) after he did not return from a day trip to a portion of the trail in Warren county. Deputies from the Warren County Sheriff’s Office were able to locate his vehicle on Pomeroy Road at 7:47 p.m. that night, but were unable to find him due to rough terrain and cold temperatures. They contacted the Virginia State Police, who used both an aviation unit and K-9 unit to locate Mr. Sowers two miles up the trail. He had been unable to walk due to a non life-threatening injury, and was extricated by Warren County Fire and Rescue before being transported to the Warren Memorial Hospital.
