Frederick Co. Activates New Text to 911 System

12 February 2019 Frederick County News

Frederick County Public Safety Communications announced yesterday (2/11/2019) that its Text-to-911 system is officially live.

This new tool was made possible by nearly 7 months of work, and Public Safety Communications Director LeeAnna Pyles said in a statement Monday that Frederick County is the first in the immediate area to provide the service. While it is generally preferable to place a phone call to 911, Text-to-911 functions as a new option for the speech or hearing impaired. It’s also intended for emergency scenarios like a home invasion, where the victim is trying to remain hidden, or a domestic assault, where it may not be safe to make a call.
