The Apple Federal Credit Union Education Foundation has awarded a $50,000 grant, renewable for up to four additional years, to Frederick County Public Schools to support the school division’s Bridges to Success teacher mentor program. Bridges to Success has served approximately 500 new teachers over the past five years by providing ongoing professional development and support designed to help new educators transition into their careers with Frederick County Public Schools. The program is provided to FCPS teachers during their first three years in the profession.
Schools Superintendent David Sovine says, “”We are extremely grateful for the financial support our Bridges to Success program has received from the Apple Federal Credit Union Education Foundation. Our school division, like others across the nation, is challenged with attracting and retaining high-quality teachers at a time when there is a national teacher shortage. Being able to support new teachers with an induction program like Bridges to Success provides us with a competitive advantage as we go through the hiring process. More importantly, this program helps position teachers to be successful in helping students achieve at high levels and reach their full potential.”
Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Jim Angelo says, “The Bridges to Success program is made possible thanks to support from the Apple Federal Credit Union Education Foundation, and is successful due to the commitment of our instructional team and the 20 lead mentors who support new teachers at each of our schools throughout the year. The program not only provides training in areas such as classroom management, engaging families, instructional strategies and ways to help struggling students, but also provides new teachers with a peer mentor with whom they can work and approach whenever they have a question or need assistance transitioning into their role as a full-time teacher.”
Apple Federal Credit Union Executive Director Steven Sengstack says, “Frederick County Public Schools is a leader in developing innovative and successful strategies for a comprehensive teacher induction program. I know they are proud of the work that is being done, and we are proud to be their partner in that important work.”
