Governor Northam And Jennifer Wexton Support New Legislation

In a letter to President Donald Trump and Congressional leadership, Governor Ralph Northam urged an end to the longest shutdown in American history and backed legislation introduced by Representative Anthony Brown of Maryland, which would overturn a U.S. Department of Labor regulation prohibiting federal essential workers who are furloughed from receiving unemployment insurance benefits. The legislation is co-sponsored by Virginia Representatives Don Beyer, Elaine Luria, and Jennifer Wexton.
The U.S. Department of Labor’s current guidance states furloughed essential federal workers, who are working without pay, are not “unemployed” within the meaning of the states’ unemployment compensation acts, leaving them ineligible for unemployment insurance benefits
