Historic Downtown to host Battle of Front Royal

FRONT ROYAL, Va. – Front Royal’s historic downtown will relive part of it’s storied past this weekend with the sights and sounds of an armed conflict as the May, 23rd 1862 Battle of Front Royal is reenacted.

Front Royal’s Civil War Weekend will take place Saturday and Sunday on Main and Chester Streets in Downtown Front Royal. The event is sponsored by the Town and the Warren Heritage Society. Activities will include living history demonstrations, musical performances and informational booths.

At 1:00pm Saturday, the 1862 Battle of Front Royal will be reenacted on Main and Chester Streets. The original battle saw more than 10,000 confederate troops under the command of Stonewall Jackson overtake a union garrison defended by about 1000 US troops.

The battle is considered by many historians as the beginning of Jackson’s 1862 Valley campaign.

Demonstrations and displays will take place on the Warren County Court House Lawn, at the gazebo commons and the Warren Heritage Society’s grounds
