HPD involved in a chase and shootout during an abduction

The Harrisonburg Police Department (HPD) reports responding to a domestic disturbance involving a gun.
The situation escalated to an abduction that led to a pursuit through downtown Harrisonburg.
The incident began in the 1000 block of Old Furnace Road when a 30-year-old male suspect took a 52-year-old female hostage at gunpoint.
The two knew one another and were reportedly in a relationship.
Officers began pursuit of the pair in the East Market Street Court Square to Liberty Steet area around 6:30 in the evening of May 6.
Officers were able to box in the vehicle near the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Regional Jail.
When Officers demanded surrender, a shot was fired from inside the vehicle.
While additional demands of surrender were ignored the female victim escaped unharmed.
With that and additional demands to drop the handgun were once again ignored Officers fired upon the vehicle and were able to subdue the suspect.
The suspect was struck multiple times and lifesaving efforts were started immediately.
The injured man was flown by emergency medical personnel to UVA Medical Center where he remained in critical condition as of Sunday morning May 7.
Per Harrisonburg Police Department policy all officers who discharged a weapon have been placed on paid administrative leave until the conclusion of the investigation.
The office of the Rockingham County Commonwealth’s Attorney will conduct a review of the situation.
After that HPD’s Professional Standards unit will conduct an internal investigation of the incident.
