I-81 Car Crash Causes Explosion, Kills One

A car crash on Interstate 81 that resulted in an explosion killed one person Monday night.

The crash occurred at about 11:20 p.m. on northbound I-81, about a mile north of Reliance Road. The victim’s 2013 Ford Explorer struck the back of a 2014 Freightliner Cascadia tractor trailer, causing the smaller vehicle to explode on impact. The state Medical Examiner’s Northern District Office is currently conducting an autopsy to determine the victim’s identity, though according to reports he is believed to be a Fauquier County man. Conditions were clear that night, and the cause of the crash remains undetermined. Virginia State Police are investigating the incident.
