Interstate 81 May Receive Safety Improvements
11 November 2017 News
After large increases in truck traffic and fatal crashes, the Virginia state government is applying for nearly $53 million in grant funds to make improvements to Interstate 81. Frederick County‘s 24 miles of interstate alone have seen 122 crashes and six deaths this year; it would be among many localities in the Shenandoah Valley benefiting from the changes.
Should the application be accepted, Exit 315 along Berryville Avenue would receive a northbound deceleration lane extension, meaning an extended ramp for vehicles to slow down and exit the interstate. Exit 300 would receive a similar extension of its on-ramp for southbound traffic, and Exit 323, near the West Virginia state line in Clear Brook, would get extensions to all of its acceleration and deceleration lanes.
