The National Highway Traffic Safety Board has Launched a campaign to attempt to “Make Sure Everyone Makes it to The Dinner Table” this Thanksgiving. The campaign uses graphic pictures and clever verbiage to convey sober messages.
Public Information Officer Caitlin Squires with the Winchester Police department says” A sad Thanksgiving tradition is that it’s one of the most treacherous driving nights of the year.” Restaurants Bars and Restaurants are often at their busiest of the year, and more people than normal take to the roadways ill-advisedly after getting behind the wheel after having too much to drink.
The intent of the campaign is to get people to think about what Thanksgiving will be like for everyone else, if the reader of the memes were not to make it to the table , due to a fatal accident caused by drunk driving. Phrases such as “Even one empty seat at the table is too many” and “If you thought you’d rather die than see your family on Thanksgiving, you might get your chance” are included along with graphics to drive the point home that everyone who doesn’t make it to the Thanksgiving dinner table effects everyone else that does. 1 out of 3 fatalities during the Thanksgiving holiday period in 2016 involved drunk drivers. Some of the memes utilize humor, with verbiage such as “If you don’t make it to Thanksgiving dinner that just means more turkey for grandpa.” It’s a fact that in the past 5 years, more than 800 people died in drunk driving crashes during the Thanksgiving holiday period.
