The third Shenandoah Valley Craft Brewery featured in our in our Shenandoah Valley BeerPod podcast series is Backroom Brewery. Host, Janet Michael chats with owner, Billie Clifton; head brewer, Darren & tasting room manager, Chris about the path to opening the brewery, background, what they’ve learned along the way and future plans for Backroom Brewery.
Backroom Brewery is a boutique farm brewery nestled in the heart of the Shenandoah River Valley. They began as a herb farm, growing culinary and medicinal herbs for the garden center trade. In 2013 they began the process of creating an ordinance in Warren County to accommodate farm breweries. By late spring, the process was complete and Backroom Brewery became the first farm brewery in the Northern Shenandoah Valley.
Their first hop harvest in August of 2013 was bountiful. They were brewing in small batches and planning their brewery construction. In the spring of 2014 they began construction and finished their brewery building plus equipment installation by July of 2014. They now have over 20 beer recipes approved by the State of VA & their tasting room bustles as their scratch kitchen cranks out delicious dishes prepared with their own fresh herbs and farm grown produce in season.
