It was a happy mistake that turned into a tradition. The footprints on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame were started, at least according to one account, when silent movie star Norma Talmadge accidentally stepped in some wet concrete on the sidewalk outside Grauman’s Chinese Theater. Other accounts are the Grauman himself stepped in the wet cement and came up with the idea. And still another account comes from Jean Klossner, who was hired by Grauman to formulate a harder concrete for use in construction of the theater. After arriving at the desired formula he signed his work. Klossner later became known as “Mr. Footprints” overseeing the hand, footprint and signature ceremonies for many years. Since the very beginnings in 1927, more than 200 celebrities have been honored with a patch of concrete on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
