Some contain moonshine while others have homemade raspberry jam. You might also find them filled with green beans, tomatoes or perhaps peaches. We’re talking about the Mason jar, named after John Landis Mason. Mason lived in New Jersey and got a patent for his glass jar with a screw top lid and separate metal disc and rubber seal in 1858. Mason’s easy and re-usable jars made home canning procedures popular among American settlers, homesteaders, and even in urban homes, but most Mason jars were manufactured by competitors after his patent expired in 1879. Probably the most notable are Ball and Kerr. I remember my mom and grandmother having swing top jars with a glass lid and metal hinges connecting it to the jar itself. It used a rubber seal and the metal hinges, or the bail, locked the lid tightly to the jar.
