It was on this date in 1975 that Veronica & Colin Scargill of England complete tandem bicycle ride around the world, a record 18,020 miles. The pair started their historic ride on February 25, 1974 in New York City and took them 19 months to complete. Patents related to tandem bicycles date from the mid 1880s. Compared to a conventional bicycle, a tandem has double the pedaling power, without necessarily doubling the speed, and with only slightly more frictional loss in the drive train. It has about the same wind resistance as a conventional bicycle. Tandem bicycles are used in competitions such as the Paralympics with blind and visually impaired cyclists riding as stokers with fully sighted captains. As for Veronica and Colin they still, to this day, ride their tandem bicycle for fun. By the way, Colin is always in the front seat while Veronica pedals from the back seat.
