Brace yourself, it’s another tool time fun fact. I inherited a lot of my fathers tools. Some modern, some not so much. The other day I was using his brace and bit. I’m 60 years old and I remember playing with this thing when I was just a boy, and it was old then. I have no idea how old it actually is. If you’re not familiar with what a brace and bit is, it’s basically a drill you crank by hand. Not an egg beater drill, that’s something different. This one has a round wooden plate, or head, at the back, an offset handle called the bow that you grip and rotate to spin a chuck, or shell, at the front that holds the drill bit. The bits usually have threads at the very end to pull the larger cutting part of the bit through the wood. The shaft of the bit is an auger that pulls the cuttings out of the hole. This particular model has a switch near the chuck that allows you to have the tool locked or allow it to ratchet both in forward and reverse. In addition to drill bits you could also get screw driver attachments so you could use it to drive or remove screws. The predecessor to the cordless drill. When ever I use this tool I think of my dad and imagine all the things he must have used it on. I know for sure, before I was born, he and my mom and brothers and sister built a barn on the farm where they lived. That drill may have been purchased for that very purpose, I don’t know.
