Fun Fact January 17, 2020.

17 January 2020

There are about 280 different species of squirrels.  All of them are rodents, most are small with big eyes and bushy tails.  Like most rodents, a squirrels front teeth never stop growing.  As a matter of fact the work “rodent” is derived from the Latin word rodere, which means to gnaw.  Squirrels hide their food, mostly nuts, during the summer so they have something to eat in the winter.  Although they can find their winter food stash in a foot of snow, squirrels do forget where buried it sometime and inadvertently plant thousands of new trees each year.  They also lose about 25% of their stash to thieves.  Because of this squirrels have been observed engaging in “deceptive caching.” This is where a squirrel digs a hole and vigorously covers it up again, but without depositing the nut. It seems this is done to throw off potential food thieves.  Squirrels are acrobatic, intelligent, and adaptable.  If you’re not convinced, do a quick search of YouTube and watch them raid a bird feeder.  Despite our best efforts to keep them from stealing the food from the birds, they always seem to find a way to get it.
