Every year a few people are killed in shark attacks, but there is a far deadlier device that we encounter in our lives nearly every day. Vending machines. Vending machines kill 4 times as many people per year as sharks. Statistics show that 37 people were killed trying to get a snack from a vending machine from 1978 to 1995. That’s an average of 2.18 deaths a year, making this cause of death way more likely than shark attacks. The yearly risk in the U.S. of dying from a shark bite is roughly 1 in 250 million. In contrast, the yearly risk of dying from a vending machine accident is roughly 1 in 112 million. Vending machines are roughly twice as deadly as sharks. Think about it, when was the last time you saw a shark in the wild. Now compare that with the last time you encountered a vending machine in your daily life. It’s pretty obvious how one would die from a shark attack, but what about from a vending machine? Aside from the contents of the machine and that consuming them could kill you slowly over time, the most common way people are killed by vending machine is that the machine falls on them, typically when a person is rocking the machine trying to get the snack they just paid for out. Now, if you’re a surfer, your odds of being killed by either a vending machine or a shark are about even.
