Today we don’t think too much about being able to see what’s going on in other parts of the world, in some cases live as it’s happening. We can make international telephone calls or computer connections in a matter of milliseconds. None of that would be possible without satellites. It was on this date in 1962 that the world’s first communications satellite was launched into orbit . The Telstar communications satellite relays the first live transatlantic television signal and the worlds telephone call transmitted through space on July 23rd. Telstar 2 was launched a little less than a year later. Neither of these two satellites are still being used, but they are still out there orbiting the earth. In 1962 a group called the Tornados released an instrumental song titled Telstar.
