2 July 2020
The Fourth of July is for fireworks, celebrations, camping, floats down the river and of course grilling. Hamburgers and hot dogs are what most will throw over the charcoal or gas fire. So, what do you put on those burgers and dogs? Mustard, cheese, onions, chili, and ketchup. One of the most popular ketchup’s on the market is Heinz ’57. You may assume that there are 57 varieties of the condiment, but there isn’t. Although an ad campaign in 1896 touted the “57 varieties of pickles” the company produced, company founder H.J. Heinz thought his product should have a number, and he liked 57. He was inspired to use the number because of an advertisement he saw while in New York for a shoe store that boasted “21 Styles”. Heinz said he chose “5” because it was his lucky number and the number “7” was his wife’s lucky number. By the way, if you want to coax the ketchup out of the bottle don’t hit it on the bottom, tap it on the number 57.
