Wouldn’t you like to be a Pepper too? It’s a blend of 23 flavors, but only a select few know what those flavors are. It’s been around since about 1885 and was actually on the market before another famous fizzy soda. Dr. Pepper was formulated by Brooklyn-born pharmacist Charles Alderton in Morrison’s Old Corner Drug Store in Waco, Texas. As a matter of fact, before it was called Dr. Pepper, folks just ordered a Waco. Early advertisements for this soft drink made medical claims, staying that it “aids digestion and restores vim, vigor, and vitality.” As for the name, it was coined by Wade Morrison, owner of Morrison’s Old Corner Drug Store. It was common to include Dr. in the name of soft drinks and other elixirs to add a air of legitimacy to the product. Apparently there was an actual Dr. Pepper who lived in Christiansburg, VA. who gave Morrison his first job as a pharmacy clerk.
