How about some bat facts today. Bat’s are the only true flying mammals. There are nearly 1200 species of bats around the world. The leg bones of most bats are so thin that only two species, the Vampire bat and the Burrowing bat, can walk on the ground. By the way, a Vampire bat doesn’t suck blood, they actually lap it up after making a small cut on the host animal, a cut that the animal doesn’t feel because the bat’s teeth are so sharp. The saliva of a Vampire bat actually has anti-coagulating properties that keeps the blood flowing until they are finished feeding. A lot of bats use caves as their homes. When they leave the cave, they always turn left. Most bats eat bugs and use echolocation to find their food and avoid running into things in the dark. One of the biggest myths about bats is that they’ll give you rabies. Fewer than 10 people in the last 50 years have contracted rabies from North American bats.
