You hear it a lot, especially during these hot summer days, stay hydrated. But did you know consuming too much water can kill you? There is a condition known as Hyponatremia, or low blood sodium. You need a certain amount of sodium in your blood to control how much water is around the cells of your body. When you sweat you loose sodium, so if you drink an excess of water the cells of your body swell which can lead to all sorts of problems and even death. Other things that can cause hyponatremia are certain medications, especially diuretics, underlying health problems, like heart or kidney disease or bouts with other illness that cause diarrhea or vomiting. Drinking liquids that replenish the sodium you lost, like certain sports drinks, will keep you hydrated and healthy.
