As American as apple pie, but apple pie isn’t an American original. The apple actually native to Asia. The first recorded recipe for apple pie was found in England and dates as far back as 1381. That recipe not only called for good apples, but good spices, figs, raisins and pears. Today there are around 7,500 verities of apples, about 2500 of those grown in the United states. Northern Spy, Granny Smith, Gala, McIntosh and Golden Delicious are among the most popular pie apples. Along with your slice of pie you may like it topped with whipped cream, ice cream or served with a slice of cheddar cheese on the side. I remember my mom serving it this way. Most every country has it’s own version of apple pie. Some use sliced apples while others use an apple puree, both sweetened with plenty of sugar or honey. Most also have various spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, some butter and sometimes lemon juice. Your pie may come with a full top crust with vent slits cut in it, a lattice top crust so you can see the apple filling or even a crumb topping. I like pie.
