Today in history with a somewhat local connection. According to History dot com, it was on this date in 1968 construction began on the north tunnel of the Eisenhower/Johnson Memorial Tunnel on Interstate 70 in Colorado, about 60 miles west of Denver. The tunnel has the distinction of being the worlds highest, in elevation, vehicular tunnel. The tunnel cuts through the Continental Divide at just over 11,000 feet. The north portion was completed in 1973, the southern lane was started in 1975 and finished in 1979. Over ten million vehicles pass through the mile and a half long tunnel each year. The north tunnel is named after Dwight D. Eisenhower and the south side named for former Governor of Colorado and U. S. Senator Edwin Johnson. The local connection? Interstate 70 runs over 2,100 miles from Cove Fort, Utah to just outside of Baltimore, Maryland. Interstate 70 was the first interstate highway project in the United States.
