While we’re all hanging out with our families, one good way to pass the time might be a board game, like Monopoly. A single game could go on for hours, if not days! The game evolved from another game called The Landlord’s Game, created by Lizzie Magie in the United States in 1903. Parker Brothers bought the copyright to the game for $500. It was first published as Monopoly in 1935. Eventually Parker Brothers was absorbed into Hasbro in 1991. The game is named after the economic concept of monopoly, or the domination of a market by a single entity. Today there are several themed versions of the game, including our local Warrenolopy. That monocled top-hatted fellow on the board game is not just named “The Monopoly Man” or “Rich Uncle Pennybags” as you probably thought. In fact, if he had a birth certificate, would read “Milburn Pennybags.” Also interesting: the policeman who tosses Milburn into jail has a name too: Officer Edgar Mallroy.
