They are buzzing about your spring flowers and feeders. Today some fun facts about the Humming Bird. There are over 300 species of Humming bird. Some humming birds weigh less than a penny. They are known as hummingbirds because of the humming sound created by their beating wings, which flap at high frequencies audible to humans. They hover in mid-air at rapid wing-flapping rates, which vary from around 12 beats per second in the largest species, to in excess of 80 in some of the smallest. Of those species that have been measured in wind tunnels, their top speeds exceed 34 mph and some species can dive at speeds in excess of 49 mph. A humming birds heart can beat up to 1,000 beats per minute, which means that they have a very fast metabolism and need a lot of calories to survive. When food is scarce they can slow down their metabolism to conserve energy. Most North American hummingbirds migrate southward in fall to spend winter in Mexico, the Caribbean Islands, or Central America.
