Care for a spot of tea? Most everyone who drinks tea uses tea in a bag to prepare the drink. Some use loose leaf tea with an infuser, but 99% of the tea consumed is made with tea in a prepackaged bag. That bag was actually a happy accident. In 1908, a tea merchant from New York named Thomas Sullivan sent samples of tea leaves to some of his customers in small silk bags. Many of the people who received them assumed that the bags were supposed to be used in the same way as the metal infusers. So, they put the entire bag into the teapot, rather than emptying out its contents. Sullivan got so much positive feedback from the happy accident, that he designed intentional teabags for commercial production. In the 1920s, his sachets were made of gauze and then later paper. Eventually they included the string to hang over the side of the cup for easy removal.
