Today’s fun fact may produce a spinning sound effect in your brain. Today we’re talking about the Tasmanian Devil. Here’s where the sound effect starts. Flashback to Saturday mornings when you were a kid. You remember the cartoon character Taz from Looney Tunes? Besides being a famous Looney Tunes character, the Tasmanian Devil is a real animal that you will only find in the wild in Tasmania, Australia. It is the largest carnivorous marsupial in the world. They are the size of a small dog with females weighing in at around 13 pounds while the males are slightly larger, weighing, on average, 18 pounds. The female can give birth to between 20 and 30 babies after a three week gestation period. They are solitary animals but will occasionally eat together and can climb trees and swim across rivers. The devil is an iconic animal within Australia, and particularly associated with Tasmania. The animal is used as the emblem of the Tasmanian National Parks and Wildlife Service.
