I frequently make popcorn as a snack for my family and it got me to thinking about a guy who’s name is synonymous with popcorn, Orville Redenbacher. He was a real person and a real scientist. He earned a degree in agronomy from Perdue University in 1928. He began his career selling fertilizer and eventually, along with a partner, purchased a seed company where they worked on perfecting popcorn. They tested tens of thousands of hybrid popcorn before settling on one they called Redbow. On the advice of an advertising agency they used Orville Redenbacher’s own name as the brand name for their product. They launched their popping corn in 1970. By the mid 70’s the company had captured a third of the unpopped popcorn market. You no doubt remember the television commercials featuring Orville, and in later years his grandson Gary, with the tag line “you’ll taste the difference or my name isn’t Orville Redenbacher.” Some of the ads also mispronounce his name, only to have him reinforce the brand by saying it correctly. Genius marketing. He received an honorary Doctorate from Perdue University in 1988. Orville had a herart attack on September 19th, 1995. He was 88 years old.
