We recorded today’s show on the Middletown campus of Lord Fairfax Community College with Brandy Boies, Director of Marketing & Outreach for the college, and her guests: Kate Gochenour, MLT Program Director & Tammy Gasper, Vice President of Shenandoah Memorial Hospital & Southern Region Medical Staff Services & Clinic Program Development. The conversation centered around LFCC’s Medical Laboratory Technology program, the time commitment it requires, the skillset, and the wide range of jobs that are available to those who complete the program. Medical Laboratory Technicians are members of the health care team who run diagnostic tests on blood and body fluids in a variety of departments including hematology, clinical chemistry, blood bank, microbiology, urinalysis and immunology. Laboratory Medicine is a fast-growing field, and there is a great demand for clinical laboratory professionals. Medical Laboratory Technician jobs will increase by 18% by 2024. More than 2X the average rate. Tammy explained the high local demand for graduates of this program and the benefits to Valley Health in partnering with LFCC for this program. Kate told us why she ultimately chose the MLT field, how the program works and about the different types of students in the program in all age groups and in all stages of life.
