We are REC – a podcast series produced in partnership with Rappahannock Electric Cooperative.

We were in the studio with Ryan White, Digital Media Specialist with REC for a conversation about video and the introduction of drones to the REC fleet. Ryan explained all the ways using drones for inspections and storm outage/restoration will decrease outage times and increase safety protocols for REC workers and members.

Lonnie's Fun Fact for Thursday October 29, 2020. Today we blast off, again. It was on this date in 1998 the John Glenn returned to space aboard Space Shuttle Discovery, 36 years after his first space flight. He was 77 and became the oldest person to ever travel in space. A decorated pilot, Glenn had flown nearly 150 combat missions during World War II and the Korean War. In 1957, he made the first nonstop supersonic flight across the United States when he flew from Los Angeles to New York in three hours and 23 minutes. Glenn was one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts chosen by NASA in 1959. Glenn made his first space flight in a craft dubbed Friendship 7 on February 20, 1962, making three obits of the earth in just over five hours. By the mid 1960's Glenn had grown tired on inactivity within NASA and turned to politics, running for a Senate seat in his home state of Ohio in 1964. He withdrew from the race after a serious ear injury. He tried again in 1970 but lost that race. Four years later he ran again and won and was reelected three times. He even threw his hat in the 1984 Presidential race, seeking the democratic nomination unsuccessfully. John Glenn died on December 8, 2016 at the age of 95.
