We pre-recorded today’s conversation via Zoom with Ken Slack, VDOT Staunton District Communications Specialist & Ed Carter, VDOT Edinburg Residency Administrator.

This was our yearly “VDOT snow show” where we get an update on VDOT‘s preparations for winter weather. We talked about the volume of salt used throughout our region, how & why brine works, the order in which roads are cleared and why, plus we discussed the pandemic precautions in place to keep their drivers safe.

The River 95.3 presents a new weekly feature, "Pets of the River crew". Each Monday, we'll feature one furry, fluffy, feathered or shelled family member of our station staff. Afternoon Traffic Jam host Lonnie Hill presents Sasha. She is 2 years old and a Shepard/Husky mix. She enjoys a good bone to chew on, being outside, walks, running and playing with her human brothers and treats, especially peanut butter. Lonnie's Fun Fact for Friday April 16, 2021. A different type of animal. I usually try to include an animal in my weekly Fun Facts, but today it's not just one, it's a whole box of animals. This Sunday is National Animal Cracker day. According to National Day Calendar dot com animal crackers first came to the United States in the late 1800s when animal-shaped cookies were imported from England. In 1902, animal crackers officially became known as Barnum’s Animals and the familiar circus train theme of the Barnum and Bailey Circus. Later that year, Nabisco designed the now-familiar box with a string for the Christmas season to hang from the Christmas tree. In 2018, Nabisco, the current maker of Barnum’s Animal Crackers, released the animals from their cages on the train and set them free. The images on the side of the boxes now show the animals roaming freely in nature. In total, 53 different animals have been featured in boxes of animal crackers since 1902. ... See MoreSee Less
