Pokin’ The Hokies

30 November 2018 Views From The Booth Sports

Greetings From The Booth!

If you’re still living on turkey sandwiches from the Thanksgiving bird, yesterday (Thursday) was “Throw Out Your Leftovers Day.” It’s probably time to ditch that last bit of stuffing that has now become a science project.

A quick reminder to get to the beautiful Wilkins Center at Shenandoah University this weekend and support the Hornet men and women’s basketball teams. The men play Saturday at 2, while the women are in action Sunday at 2. Both teams are fun to watch, and could use your support during a time of year when students are usually on holiday breaks and gyms are devoid of energy.

It’s also so-called Championship Weekend in college football, with most conferences holding their money-grab championship games. There actually are some meaningful and compelling matchups, as the College Football Playoff “Final Four” will be decided. With an expected Alabama win in the SEC title game, Georgia will most likely drop out of the 4-spot, making way for (probably) Oklahoma or Ohio State. First, the Sooners must get by Texas in the Big 12 Championship, while Ohio State must beat Northwestern in the Big 10 title game. It’s going to be a wild weekend!

That takes us to 5-6 Virginia Tech, who will play a “conditional game” against Marshall Saturday at noon in hopes of becoming bowl eligible and keep their consecutive bowl streak alive. They are in position to do this because of their dramatic win over rival UVA last weekend.

Question: when one team has beaten another 15 times in a row, can we call it a rivalry? Probably in name only. The Hokies had beaten the Cavaliers 14 consecutive times going into last weekend’s game at Lane Stadium. Yet, UVA was the team that did most of the chirping leading up to the game. The Cavaliers have had a solid year under coach Bronco Mendenhall and this was the year they were expected to finally beat a young Hokies team. Virginia fans, coaches, and players alike were vocal in their intent on marching into Blacksburg and smacking the Hokies around. Instead, it was Tech who found a way to once again beat the blue bloods from C’Ville.

So now Va Tech gets to play another game. Although I don’t like the optics of adding another game just to play in a minor December bowl, I get that there are financial considerations, and the extra practice time leading into 2019 is invaluable. My friend and Sports Dogs sidekick “Coach C” is well-versed in the inner workings of how this game with the Herd came about, so I’ll defer to him on that. But excuse me if I root for Marshall tomorrow…

So ditch the leftovers (just order a pizza) and enjoy what should be a wacky weekend in college football! Until our next visit from the Booth…GO HORNETS!
