Public Notice: Smoke Testing in Front Royal

24 September 2019 Front Royal/Warren County News

September 24, 2019

FRONT ROYAL – The Town of Front Royal announced that the Front Royal Water and Sewer Department will conduct smoke testing from now until Nov. 1. The tests will take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. over the stated time frame.

The tests are done to check the quality of water/sewer lines throughout the town. FRWSD will post door hangers in specific areas of the town shortly before smoke testing begins in said areas.

Citizens should be on the lookout for white smoke popping up in areas around them after receiving a door hanger. If a set of lines is intact fully, no smoke will come above ground. The only time smoke will come above ground is at sewer grates and when leaks are present.

In order to minimize smoke entering a building, water should be poured down all open drains prior to the test being conducted.

Avoid any contact with the smoke if possible. Nasal irritation can occur during exposure to the smoke. If you do come in contact with it, any irritation will be temporary and should quickly disappear after exposure to the smoke has ceased. Any persons with heart/respiratory issues should leave home when testing occurs in your area. Pets should be given proper ventilation or removed from the home.

If there is any smoke within your home, contact the Public Works Department immediately. The PWD number is (540)-635-7819. You can contact the Department between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. If you need to call about smoke during off-hours for the Department, contact the Non-Emergency Police Department. The number to call for NEPD is (540)-635-2111.

No smoke testing will be conducted from Oct. 15-28. FRWSD will conduct hydrant flushing during that time period.
